My Students

A number of exciting demonstrations in Chemistry are too dangerous to perform without a shield between the reaction and the students.

My students are inquisitive sophomores and juniors.

They love to ask questions and explore the answers to those questions. It can be difficult to grab the attention of these fourteen, fifteen and sixteen-year-old students who are used to being entertained at home and in a movie theater. Typical lectures are not the most effective teaching tool for them, but teaching through examples is great!

My Project

With the requested safety shield, I will be able to show my students the dramatic reaction between water and metals such as lithium, sodium, and potassium. I will also be able to show how salts of these metals are highly reactive bears when the salts are molten and produce a fiery reaction known as "The Dragon". Another reaction I do not dare to do without a safety shield is one that involves heating water sealed in a glass vial that is typically used to demonstrate evaporation and condensation. These are just three examples of classic demonstrations that I am unable to perform due to a lack of this basic piece of safety equipment.

Students learn best from first hand experiences.

Seeing and performing chemical reactions first-hand not only makes the learning process more fun, but it also makes it more effective. By utilizing this safety shield, my students will be enriched and inspired to learn more about chemistry and the world around them.
