My new group of kiddos is a SWEET group! They all have huge hearts and are so considerate of each other. As I grow as a teacher, I can't help but notice that my kids need unstructured playtime to learn social behaviors and expectations. They are always happiest when they get to explore and discover new things. I want to create that environment for them in our classroom. The kids love to move, create new things, and share with the class what they are learning.
My Project
I've been observing in my classroom to see what I think my kids need and could benefit from the most. They LOVE to build. Any time we have a reward, they request to play with the math manipulatives. I want to give them more opportunities for unstructured playtime.
I plan to use both the LEGOs and the Play-Doh for so many different fun activities!
We already use Play-Doh in our classroom to practice letter and number formation, as well as for an incentive for certain students. Don't forget that Play-Doh can strengthen a child's fine motor skills!
The LEGOs are going to be first and foremost a reward for awesome behavior. As the kids mature and become more responsible, I plan to use them when we are exploring different literacy elements. For example, if we read a story that is set in a castle, I will set a group of kids on a mission to build the setting with the LEGOs. They would then have to present it to the class or write about it.
