Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school form a diverse group of learners that have different needs. I work in a Title I school where all students have been offered free lunch and breakfast. My students live in a high-poverty, rural area but are never discouraged to learn and be successful.

Fifth-grade is a very important year for students to develop the skills necessary for transitioning to middle school, such as problem-solving, analyzing, and organizing.

More importantly, they need to develop their cultural competency and social skills before advancing to middle school. I believe these skills can be developed through reading books written from different perspectives. Also, I would like them to grow their islands of expertise through reading and discovering their interests.

My Project

My students and I are working together to improve their reading levels. The first step for us to take is to have my students enjoy reading by exploring their interests and seeing the world through reading. My students make connection between the books they are reading to their lives and to the world that they know. My goal is to add more books that include cultural diversity and appropriate for their reading levels into our classroom library.

By donating to this project, you will make it possible for these fifth graders to improve their reading abilities and expand their knowledge of the world.

With these new texts, my students will have access to literacy through the context of science and social-emotional learning that will allow them to grow more independently as fifth-grade readers.
