Our school is in a rural area with few opportunities to visit the outside world. Through World Drumming curriculum I can bring parts of the larger world into my music classroom. Using rhythms from Africa, Asia, Latin American and Native American traditions we will travel the world.
My students are predominately Caucasian with a growing population of Hispanic students.
We live in an agricultural area that is very rural. Our school of 450 students follows a K-8 model with the middle school ages included in the elementary setting. We love the older kids teaching the younger. Though our students do well on standardized test they don't have much exposer to other cultures. By bring in music from other cultures I hope to help increase the appreciation my students have for other cultures.
My Project
Hands on drumming! Putting together rhythm ensembles and drum circles, play rhythms and music from the corners of the earth. Studying the music and culture of other lands and places. Getting our "hands dirty" so to speak by playing others peoples music on our drums. For example we might not be able to travel to Zimbabwe but we can learn about the people and play their music. We can't travel to the Yucatan Peninsula but we can play the ancient rhythms passed down from the Maya. We can experience the spirit and life blood of another place and time by playing their music and rhythms.
By donating to provide my school with drums I will be able to have each class playing as a group.
Everyone participating at the same time with nobody left out or waiting. We can learn about the music of the world together as a community of musicians.
