Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a third year fifth grade teacher of all subjects in Sunset Park Brooklyn. The school in which I teach is a Title I school and all of the students are eligible for free lunch.
One thing I love about teaching fifth grade is the social studies curriculum which is American History. We begin the year teaching about the American Revolution, following with Westward Expansion, the Civil War and ending the year with Immigration. The difficulty I encounter is that we do not use any textbooks in the classroom. We are required to use authentic literature for read alouds, shared reading and independent reading. There is a severe lack of resources due to my school being fairly new.
What my students need is books with primary documents, photos, diaries and accounts from the period of Westward Expansion in history. This way they can work in groups and analyze and have discussions about what they are reading during group work as well as while working independently. As a class, we can have a shared reading discussion together in addition to whole class discussions. I try to always teach social studies in an interactive way so that all of my students are involved. This works in my classroom and my students love Social Studies. After every study they ask me if they can do group projects. This is every teacher's dream!!
