Exploring the Responsibility of Government

My Students

I teach at a Title I public middle school in the Bay Area. I have an incredibly diverse class that is representative of our city.

My students are incredibly tenacious and curious.

They're not passive learners; instead, they question and think critically about the issues we discuss in class.

Given today's political and social climate, it's important they read novels that explore these issues and bring relevance to our youth's lives. My students are curious about the society and the world they live in.

My Project

This class set of "The Giver" will allow students to explore certain issues through literature before they become active participants in our society. As we read the novel, we'll pause to discuss and share our thoughts about the role and responsibility of our government.

Not only will students be able to read and think critically about what they read, they'll also actively engage in discussion with each other about relevant social and political issues.

By doing so, our students become knowledgeable about themselves, their beliefs, and each other, which in turn, train them to become active participants of our society as they get older.
