Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

What if all students who graduated high school were prepared to go to college? At the school where I teach, our goal is just that. I teach Conceptual Physics to 110 9th graders at a charter school in California. The school is truly heterogeneous. We have students from all walks of life. Over 30% of the students I teach are English Language Learners, and many more are the first in their families to even think about going to college.

Many students come to the school very uninterested in science. They have the experience of science being either very difficult to understand, or very boring to learn. I've come to believe then that part of my job as their first science teacher is not only to teach them science content, but also to get them interested and excited about science.

In Northern California, we are lucky to live near one of the greatest science museums in the world: the Exploratorium. This is an absolutely stunning place, which is full of fun, interesting, and astounding exhibits which are directly related to the concepts the students are learning in my class. Taking a trip to this museum will help expand their thinking about what science can be, and will also help them better understand the applications of the concepts they are learning in class.

Your donation will help encourage a love of science for an incredibly special and diverse group of kids. As our society demands more and more scientists and engineers to function, it is imperative that we get as many students as possible excited about those fields and excited about studying them in college. You can help make that happen!
