My Project

During the second semester in the 3D Design classes, students learn how to complete their ceramic projects using acrylic paint. 3D Design 1 students are constructing ceramic birdhouses, so they will use color to emphasize details and textures in order to create unity in the designs. In the 3D Design 2 class, students are creating ceramic hands holding objects. To paint the hands, students will learn methods to mix colors to create a variety of skin tones, which does require practice. Providing individual sets of paintbrushes in different sizes, and palettes also encourages students to take care of their art supplies. The science of color is amazing because it helps explain how we perceive color, which we examine in class by analyzing how artists use color for their sculptures.

Prior to painting the ceramic projects, we spend time learning and reviewing the basics of color theory through color mixing, allowing students to immediately recognize how colors change and contrast.

By exploring the relation of colors in our world, such as how popular brands, such as Apple and fast food companies, influence what we prefer as consumers, students become more aware of their visual culture. The color wheel is a way to demonstrate and explain color schemes, which students will reference when designing the color plan for their ceramic birdhouses. To create visual contrast, students also learn dry brushing techniques, allowing them to show off textures and small details. Using acrylic paint allows students to achieve colors not possible using ceramic glaze.
