Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th and 8th grade students are beyond amazing! They excel and exceed my very rigorous expectations. I am extremely proud of them and want to be able to expose them to the culture and rich history of the Spanish language at both levels I and II through exciting projects and relevant physical materials. Unfortunately, my school does not have a budget for the foreign language department, but I refuse to provide them with anything but excellent opportunities.
My students attend a Title I school with a variety of cultural backgrounds, financial means, and many are first year language learners with minimal support at home.
I have so much diversity and they show me something new everyday. I love seeing them immerse themselves in everything from art to music, and history to even math in Spanish class.
This is one the only electives that is given for high school credit and I have a responsibility to show them what the language is all about without having to limit their creativity because financially we cannot meet their needs. We would be able to flourish even more if given the opportunity and not be limited to the classroom.
My Project
My students will be choosing a culture project topic to research and report on this quarter. They need a variety of resources, including books, and basic restaurant supplies for those that choose the authentic food preparation part of it. Middle school students are very hands on and need physical materials to effectively portray their projects to the classroom and myself.
In learning a second language it is not only important to learn the mechanics of the language itself, but also to understand the culture of the people who speak the language.
This project will definitely show that through both individual projects and partner ones. This will consist of Spanish-speaking countries, traveling, biographies of famous Hispanic people, authentic food preparation, and traditional music.
