"Knowing is not enough; we must apply." ~Johann Von Goethe. The value of the theoretical knowledge acquired in the study of human anatomy and physiology is demonstrated when it is applied in a hands-on skill performance experience.
My classrooms are composed of 10th through 12th grade students enrolled in the Academy of Medical Sciences at the school.
The four Health Science classes and the Anatomy & Physiology classes provide exposure to the different areas in the health care field, as well as training to enter the workforce upon graduation. Our students come from diverse social backgrounds and low income households. They have elected to enroll in the Academy of Medical Sciences by choice, since they aspire to become health care professionals. The students are focused and understand the correlation between quality of life and education.
My students need a total of 15 sheep brains for dissection. The proposed project entails the objectives of exposing these students to career options in the medical field, evaluating manual dexterity, acquiring a thorough knowledge of a variety of systems in the study of anatomy and physiology of the human body, aseptic technique, organization, observation and critical thinking skills, as well as learning the importance of documentation. The dissection of brains, as a unit of function will provide these future medical professional with an in-depth and detailed application of knowledge through a hands-on learning experience.
Due to present budget cuts to our educational system, it is difficult to provide lessons that involve students in productive and motivating hands-on experiences that provide a wealth of knowledge, skills, and educational preparation.
Dissection provides exceptional training for any future health professional. Unfortunately, dissection labs are quite costly. Unless teachers receive funds from outside sources, the lack of these types of lessons will hinder our educational process and our students.
