Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a highly agricultural area of Central California. Some are high-level, advanced placement students while others are lower level students. The majority of my students are on free and reduced lunch. Some of them are classified as special needs and/or language learners which is fine by me since I love teaching all sorts of students!
My life's work revolves around my students and my passion is teaching science.
Students enjoy coming to my class to learn about the world that revolves around them and these students are the reason I go to work each day! They are smart, inquisitive, energetic and have a great sense of humor. They are willing to try any sort of laboratory experience, project or activity I throw at them. Inquiry-based and hands-on learning are the norm for my students!
My Project
For the past three years, I have worked to bring a sustainability and environmental resources career pathway to my high school. During this time, I have worked with local industry partners to bring important hard & soft skills to the Geology, AP Environmental Science and AP Biology students at my school. What I have found is that there is a need for data collection, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Imagine students working with industry partners on local science projects while working on global projects with scientists and the Maijuna Community of the Amazon Rainforest of Peru.
Being a part of the Amazon Rainforest Workshop will help my understanding of how and why the Amazon rainforest of Peru is an important natural resource along with me gaining understanding of its global importance in the world around us. Working with scientists in the field, doing hands-on investigations and learning their data collection techniques will help me plan curriculum for my pathway.
I envision putting together curricula that is inquiry-based and NGSS aligned. I look forward to using the Amazon rainforest as the "phenomena" in my classes. My curricula will include having students look for heat islands in and around our campus, based on data they collect. Students will also monitor our native garden for biodiversity in our temperate biome and compare it to the biodiversity from the pictures found on camera traps from the rainforest. I look forward to expanding the carbon sink in trees lab my colleague and I wrote to include Amazon rainforest information. Also, collaborating with other educators at the workshop is important and will literally impact thousands of students.
