Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a class of 20 kindergartners, ready to learn and striving to do our best. We are ready to make strides to become 21st-century learners!
Our students are living in the high poverty area of the inner city.
Many of our students are currently living in shelters or involved with a homeless project. Therefore, many of them have no prior experience with technology before coming to school. The families of our students have little technology resources outside of our building.
Our students come to us each morning to receive breakfast and to have a safe and encouraging learning "family." Our students then receive a free school lunch to fill up for an afternoon of learning. As teachers, we also provide extra clothes to keep our kiddos warm when the weather changes and make sure that our students have clean clothes for attending school each day. Our room is 20 "striving to do our best" kindergartners strong.
My Project
I have been searching for an opportunity for my students to get their hands on early coding and robotics. My students will have limited to no background experience with robotics and coding as they come to kindergarten. I believe that the Bee Bots and Magna-Tiles will be a powerful opportunity for ALL of my students to be engaged. I believe that even our most reluctant and challenging kids with being in LOVE with the Bee Bots and Magna-Tiles. Both manipulatives can be used for a wide variety of learning objectives! My students will have the opportunity to practice complex thinking and problem-solving! The possibilities are endless! Bee Bots allow for opportunities to include reading skills, math skills, and life cycle skills. Magna-Tiles will allow my students to explore magnetic properties and building structures. With these Magna-Tiles, we can all explore number sense, geometry, symmetry, and so much more! I would love to allow their creativity to thrive as they build and explore with their mathematical skills!
