Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Good readers know many common words automatically.
My kindergarteners need hands-on practice to cement these sight words for good.
I teach 20 kindergarten children in a urban public school.
We are Tile One School in a high poverty area. Most of my students are English Language Learners. They come to school with very little alphabet or word knowledge in English. However, they are very eager to learn and make amazing academic progress in short periods of time.
My Project
I have requested sight word games and books that will help my students recognize, read and write sight words. The students will use the games to build and sort sight words during literacy work stations. They will then apply their sight word knowledge by reading the sight word sentences and books during reading groups . These resources will help open the world of reading for my kindergarten students! According to many reading experts, one hundred of these sight words make up 50 percent of what children read and write in the early years of school. My beginning readers will build essential reading skills by developing a large sight word vocabulary. Successful readers love to read and the love of reading is the best gift to give a child.
This project will have an effect on many children.
The materials will be used by six kindergarten classes for years to come. The impact these resources have on the students will last a lifetime! They will provide children with a concrete foundation for sight word development and help them become better readers. The ability to read is a necessity in every subject for school and beyond.
