Exploring Science Through Interactive Notebooks and Classroom Engagement
Help me give my students the basics necessary to engage in learning through classroom activities in the science classroom. With individual whiteboards and interactive notebook supplies, interaction and participation will thrive through guided learning.
Our school population consists of students from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds with the majority being low-income; however, our students reflect a sense of pride and spirit towards our school.
Our students have had limited opportunities to experience activities many of us take for granted and they embrace each and every juncture with joy and enthusiasm.
Many of our students have not had the luxury to participate in hands-on learning experiences and explore through scientific experimentation due to limited funding. Over 60% of the students in our community come to middle school as "at-risk" learners. Our students have made exceptional gains in the area of science on end of year assessments. The students at TMS can not only be proficient in science, but with hands-on learning, they can develop a love for science.
My Project
In my science class, students investigate through the scientific method by creating and maintaining their own interactive science journals. The upkeep and maintenance of these journals requires the daily use of basic supplies as we delve into labs and interactive lessons. Many students do not have the means to supply these materials throughout the school year. By supplying these necessary materials, students will be able to achieve success through organized journal keeping.
Student engagement is the center of the science classroom.
My students love participating in test review and content practice through interactive games and competition in class. By having a personal white board for each student to participate, engagement will be enhanced and students will be able to easily communicate what they have learned in order to demonstrate mastery of the subject area.
