My students grew up in the heart of Waimanalo, located on the Windward side of Oahu, in the state of Hawaii. This place is a very close knit community. My students come from struggling families, and they just need a lot of love! We work every day to be college ready, and prepare ourselves for the real world.
Our school is located in a predominately rural, low-income neighborhood, with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Pacific Islander ancestry.
My Project
This project will cover the cost of Bishop Museum, where my class will get a one of kind visit to learn about earth, life, space, science, and Hawaiian history.
The Bishop Museum offers a wide range of programs in culture and science.
The Science Adventure Center is a 16,500-square-foot facility where students will experience immersive, interactive exhibits on the geology, biology, and oceanography of the Hawaiian Islands.
Exhibits explore ocean, wind, and the volcanic forces that have shaped the Hawaii Archipelago. My students will participate in the Who Wants to Be a Rock? exciting game show as they learn about the rock cycle, plate tectonics, and the geology of Hawaii.
They will also watch the Planetarium show Wayfinders: Waves, Winds, and Star. They will visit the Explorers of Polynesia Wayfinders exhibit too. This exhibit will put my students on the deck of the voyaging canoe Hōkūle‘a as they explore traditional Polynesian star navigation and find their way to Tahiti from Hawaii.
The Bishop Museum also offers a variety of culture programs in the Hawaiian Hall Complex. My students will explore how the ocean surrounding the Hawaiian Islands has shaped traditions of Hawaiian culture and connects us to the broader Pacific Island community.
