We have all experienced the world of bacteria, whether it is when eating yogurt, getting a vaccine, or having an illness. Although this area of science touches all humans, for many students this is still an abstract part of learning.
Since I teach at a discipline alternative school, many of my students are already disenfranchised by the education system.
They feel that education is not something they can be successful in. They also are not engaged in a lot of traditional book learning. By providing them with hands on learning they can be reintroduced to education and develop an intrinsic motivation to learn.
My Project
For this project I am asking for microscope slides showing different types of bacteria, as well as a culture set. This will allow the students to get a hands on experience with a typically abstract group of organisms. Another benefit to this is giving them technical experience that could inspire them to pursue a career in medicine. Since many careers in the medical field are attainable with technical education or an associates degree my students would feel this is more accessible to them.
With these tools my students could experience science that otherwise would be left at posters, books, and definitions.
Please donate and help these students experience since the way it is meant to be learned.
