My students need math manipulatives for an interactive classroom experience. Math is better learned in a dynamic moving classroom, where students can get hands on real world application of math.
I teach a spirited group of 6th grade math enthusiasts in an urban Title I school. The school serves approximately 600 students with 67% being Hispanic, 50% being English language learners, and 30% of 6th graded tested proficient in grade level math.
I desire to create a flexible yet structured learning environment where my students can grow and explore and learn to love math and an environment that promotes collaborative learning so that students can learn skills needed to be productive citizens.
My Project
When kids can find joy in the classroom, they can "own" their education and grow into their full academic and social potential.
This project will help me create a math classroom that is not just students sitting and doing math.
To do collaborative learning, I have chosen post-it tablets to post around the room so that students can be up and moving while doing math. The dry erase boards can be used in place of paper for student work and will help saves the planet.
Students will have hands-on manipulatives with the geometric shapes, fraction tiles, and Unix cubes. These materials will make exploring math engaging, fun, and allow kids to think more deeply about numbers and the world around them.
These materials will help students see that math is all around them in many things they do. I desire to see my students grow to love to learn math now and beyond!
