Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority our students come from a low-income background. 94% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our students have had limited opportunities to leave their home of Pahoa and travel around the island.
Many students' families don't have cars and have never been to the other side of the island where our trip will take them.
This excursion will take students to Kohala and allow them to experience Hawaii's history in a fun and new way. Please support our students in learning about their home and history.
My Project
Our students will go to Flumin Kohala where they will explore the Kohala Ditch Company’s hand-built, century-old irrigation system. Students will have the opportunity to learn about many historic points of interest associated with King Kamehameha, the Hawaiian civilization, and the rise & fall of sugar.
This place-based learning will provide our students with real-life experiences connected to our 5th grade science and social studies curriculum.
This one-of-a-kind experience will teach our students much more than they would ever be able to learn in the classroom. It will help them connect with their heritage and understand better where they come from.
