Mrs. B. from AR is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need books that will not only grab their attention, but that they can relate to.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students come from a low-income/high poverty school district; many of my students face a multitude of challenges both in the classroom and at home. My school district sets in the middle of Delta Arkansas and the entire district is on the free lunch program. Many of my students come from single parent families. Some of my children's parents struggle with reading themselves.
Despite the many challenges they face, my students demonstrate a real desire to learn and improve.
Many of my students are reading two or more grade levels behind. My goal is to find simple, creative, and meaningful learning experiences that will stick with them throughout their lives. I want to give them a true love and passion for reading so that their reading skills may improve. The skills they learn in my classroom will hopefully follow them the rest of their lives in whatever directions they choose to pursue.
These books will be used to teach fundamentals of literature such as plot, hero's journey, and the effect of setting on character's choices and perspectives. The use of interesting stories that stem from fantasy will engage my students and expose them to great writers and literature alike. Hopefully, use of fantasy and myth will grab their interest and instill a great love for reading. It was books like these that sparked my own love of reading and I'm hoping that sharing some of my favorite stories will help to light a desire to read in my students that will not soon be put out.
