My students need a complete listening center. This includes headphones, CD player and books with CDs that they can listen and follow along with the narrator.
My Students are apart of a Head Start program. This program allows for a diverse classroom in a variety of areas. These students come from many backgrounds, cultures and various incomes. We have a mixture of 3, 4, and 5 year olds in our classroom.
My students come to school excited to learn and discover new things.
They are naturally curious about everything from the everyday routines to the different centers in our room. As for students that have been in school before they come back to school wanting to build on what they have already learned and show their classmates their skills. My preschoolers are eager to learn and share in our school family!
My Project
In our classroom we are full of emergent readers. They are just learning how to identify letters and the sounds that they make. Having a listening center will give my preschoolers the opportunity to listen to a narrator read to them as they see the words on each page. This allows them to connect written words to the spoken words.
As emergent readers my students need access to read along books as it models fluent reading.
Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly and with expression. We teach through modeling because our students learn by what they see, hear, and experience. With read aloud books students get to hear how a story is supposed to sound, so when they see an exclamation point they read it with excitement.
There are many benefits to having access to a listening center. They are able to listen to stories multiple times, which aids in fluency, word recognition, and comprehension. My students will gain new vocabulary, exposure to different dialects and accents, and listening to the words being spoken helps them with proper pronunciation of words.
Listening centers not only give them the opportunity to hear their favorite story but they get to practice their listening skills. Listening skills are vital at this age. This is why with our listening center we need headphones so that the students can fully engage in listening with out distractions. Donating to this project will give my students an amazing resource to help them with their reading and listening skills, and so much more!
