Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fifth grade teacher in a self-contained classroom who needs some materials necessary for my students to continue to create wonderful projects connected to the literature that we read. Because I have 32 students and we use lots of materials, I am constantly running out of art supplies. Specifically, we use oil pastels, Sharpie markers, and color pencils.
When our class reads a novel, I try to introduce a literature-connected project for the students to complete. These projects include character sketches, filmstrips, dioramas, and time-lines. All of these projects require my students to think critically about the novel that we read and express their ideas through both writing and art. Students take great pride in their work.
The oil pastels and color pencils will be used when students are coloring the artwork connected to their projects. The Sharpie markers are constantly used in our class for various purposes. One way is when students trace their writing so that it is visible and easy for others to read when it is displayed.
Because I have a large number of students, we need to share all the time and in some cases, we need to make do with the limited resources that we have. If this proposal is funded, our class will be able to use the extra art supplies to continue to extend our learning with these projects.
