Students can be taught to read and they can be taught reading comprehension strategies. The challenge is to get them to use them every time they read, whether for school or for pleasure. I believe that students make more progress when they enjoy what they are learning and are experiencing new things
My students want to love reading.
They get excited when they see new books and they work hard to learn how to understand what they are reading. Many of my students come from homes where there are no books and no art supplies. Their only exposure to new experiences comes from school. Many start their education behind and struggle to catch up. More than 75% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Many families struggle to purchase even basic school supplies each year.
My Project
I am requesting a selection of art supplies so that my students can integrate art and reading in ways they may never have experienced before. After my students are done reading their assigned texts, they will use some of their Independent Work Time to study their text and create an art project showing what they learned. They might make puppets of the main characters and create a puppet show to share, or a map of the important places in the story. They could write and create their own story book telling what happened after the story ended. By allowing them to show their learning in their own way, they will become more invested in our classroom. By using art in our classroom, students will enjoy and become more proficient with their reading and reading comprehension.
Our students face more struggles than many students and do not have many of the opportunities that some people take for granted.
By allowing my students to explore materials they may not have worked with before, and use them in new ways, I hope that my students will become more enthusiastic and invested in their learning and that this will translate into improved academic achievement.
