Exploring Identities: Who We Are Through Narratives
Help me give my students the opportunity to explore identity and narrative in literature through the texts and audio CDs of "The Hate U Give" and "Because You'll Never Meet Me".
Our students are creative, out-of-the-box thinkers who love and excel in the arts. They are truly unique individuals who love to work in collaborative teams to solve problems and use their art to show what they know. These students chose a performing arts school because they want to be part of a small learning community and part of a creative team. These student artists do their best when they can learn through the lens of the art they love.
As such, most of their knowledge is gained through group projects that are integrated with the arts.
They are given a wide array of choices from which to craft projects that include the content they are studying, various areas of arts, and multiple ways to show us how they have mastered both the National Core Arts Standards and the Common Core Standards as well. In this learning environment, the teacher becomes the facilitator of learning and not the giver of instruction. The students truly drive their own education.
My Project
As part of our year’s theme exploring the purpose and value of narrative, my students will be exploring different modes of storytelling through critical lenses.
To dive into the way storytelling helps shape our identities, my students will be reading and listening to the audio of the award-winning novels “The Hate U Give” and “Because You’ll Never Meet Me”.
In these units, my students will be using these texts and audio CDs to analyze theme, story development, and how the narrative process can help uncover different parts of our identities. The students will participate in Literature Analysis Circles as formative work for their Untold Story narrative assignments and literature analysis pieces. These novels are quality, culturally conscious texts that will inspire my students to be creative in the way they think about and tell their own stories, exemplifying dreaming big despite limiting circumstances. The audio CDs of these novels will also help many of my students with visual processing needs, to access this text meaningfully, allowing all of my students to explore these relevant, modern texts.
Please help my students tap into their creativity and dream big by providing us with these texts and audio CDs.
