Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with students who are English language learners and have learning disabilities. They also come from families that struggle with paying bills and affording school supplies and books. Despite these challenges, my students bring many strengths to the classroom, including a passion for learning and a willingness to take risks as they acquire the building blocks of reading.
My students love math, science, computers, and art, and they love learning how things work.
They are curious about the world and are eager to improve their literacy skills.
My Project
My students need hammers, nails, wooden boards, and colorful string to create their own works of art inspired by Nature and geometric shapes. They will plan their designs on paper and then transfer their designs to the wood. Next, my students will hammer in the nails. Finally, they will use the colorful string to create a rhythmic design for their circle, triangle, parallelogram, pentagon, hexagon, or octagon shape. They can choose to use one color or several colors to create a pattern and a sense of rhythm.
According to Katy Farber's article, "4 Ways to Make Math More Relevant", "When students do hands-on projects in math, they create a mental scaffold of concepts." Students who explore geometry by creating a work of art with their hands will have a deeper understanding of concepts such as radius, diameter, and symmetry while also experiencing more engagement and interest in the learning process.
My students will be proud of the original works of art that they will create using these building and craft supplies. They will also feel a sense of pride in learning how to hammer in a nail, a skill they will be able to use throughout their lives. They will be able to bring their geometric masterpieces home to share with their families and to keep as a memory of their sixth grade year.
