This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach middle school band to many creative, curious, and resilient students. Many of them are beginning and intermediate level students learning to read, write, and play music for the first time. As a band, they work together to help and encourage each other as they learn and grow.
My drum and percussion students have been especially eager to learn to play instruments this year.
Together they have learned the basics of playing snare and bass drum, timpani, suspended cymbal, bells, conga, and drum set. They take turns rotating through each instrument and helping each other improve.
They have performed a successful winter concert for the school and community. The students are working hard to prepare for their next concert for the late spring.
My Project
Many of my students have an interest in exploring drums and percussion at my school. Unfortunately, we have a small collection of instruments. There often is not enough instruments for everyone interested or enough to play a variety of different music styles. With these instruments, we can maintain the instruments we have longer and more students will have the opportunity to explore drum instruments through diverse music styles.
This project will help keep students engaged and excited to develop their drum and percussion skills.
The instruments included in this project will allow my students to learn to play music in jazz, Latin, marching, and many more styles.
