My students come from diverse backgrounds and each bring a unique experience to the learning environment. They are teenagers who are journeying through self-discovery and learning about the world around them, so they need opportunities to open their minds and have authentic discussions.
My Project
Being an ELA teacher, it’s essential that I expose my students to a variety of texts from a variety of authors. My goal is to create a more inclusive curriculum and ensure that each student can identify with the voice sharing his/her story through whichever novel we read. Just Mercy changed my perspective in so many ways and allowed me more understanding for the hardships of the Black community. Using this text in class provides the opportunity for authentic research on the novel’s various topics such as mass incarceration, the death penalty, and juvenile prison sentences, and it will encourage students to carry its messages beyond the classroom. I want my students to be informed and educated on the issues so that they can be meaningful contributors to the betterment and progress of our society.
