This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are an energetic bunch of three and four-year-olds who love to EXPLORE everything! Most of them are in a classroom setting for the very first time. We are learning the basics-- how to hold a pencil, how to interact with a book, how it feels when someone takes a toy we want to play with.
My students face a variety of challenges, yet they come to school each day with smiles, hugs, and an appetite for learning.
They look out for one another and are fascinated by the new experiences that school provides.
My students come from a community that is full of grit. Located on the far south side of Chicago, 97% of students come from a low-income household, yet attendance records remain high. My classroom is set up with numerous centers, to give the students opportunities to play, discover, and interact with various educational materials. Through play, conversation, and teacher guidance, my children will leave with a strong foundation in literacy, math, science, social science, and social/emotional health.
My Project
Children are interested in clothes from a very young age. By the time children are in preschool, they develop distinct preferences for colors, fabrics, and styles of their clothing. Children's interest in clothes can be the foundation for exploring social studies and science concepts.
My students need hands-on materials to allow them to explore the features of clothing.
We will be learning about different kinds of clothes and fabrics, how clothes are made and sold, what clothes we wear for special occasions, and how clothes have changed over time. Through these investigations, children will use and practice skills in literacy, math, technology, and the arts.
This project will allow us to purchase art materials to design our own clothing, tools to measure our clothing, buttons to compare, contrast, and count, and more! These materials can be sent home with students for remote learning, or used in the classroom as we transition to learning in person.
