Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are extremely creative, kind and ambitious. They want to go to college and for many of them they would be the first in their family to do so. I have English learner and Accelerated students who would benefit from Woodson's poetry.

67% of our students are considered socio-economically disadvantaged and their families cannot afford to buy the extra supplies.

Our current unit focuses on the civil rights movement, and I would like to have a copy of "Brown Girl Dreaming" by Jacqueline Woodson for the 40 students I have in each class.

My Project

Woodson beautifully demonstrates what it was like to grow up in the 1960s and 1970s through poetry.

Poetry will allow for students who are struggling with English to chunk their reading and digest the words.

My accelerated students will develop additional poetry skills as well by developing an understanding for imagery, syntax and word choice.

Students will read each poem together. The culminating project is to pick a poem from the books and create a visual representation of the piece. They can perform it, animate a video, paint and more to share their visual representation of Woodson's coming of age story.
