Exploring and Uncovering Indigenous History through Texts and More
Help me give my students access to quality information encompassing multiple cultures and customs through texts featuring indigenous peoples' perspectives and insight.
“Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization.” ― Mahatma Gandhi
My students come from diverse cultural backgrounds with commonalities in socio-economic status.
They live in a high impact area with ninety-eight percent receiving free or reduced price lunch. Despite the obstacles they face daily, (incarceration of parents, homelessness, poverty), my kids come to school with positive attitudes and an enthusiasm to learn and become world changers. They show me everyday what it means to be resilient because they continue to persevere and have a growth mindset. They have a desire to achieve their goals and realize that through team work, perseverance and grit, they can accomplish anything.
My kids are talented, creative and mindful about their future, but they need the resources to help them accomplish their goals. Though they lack exposure to many events and experiences in life that the many of us take for granted, they continue to believe that they will achieve and make their personal dreams a reality.
My Project
Students will research, collaborate and discuss the information they uncover through the books provided. Students will access online and audio visual material to support their learning.
Understanding our place in history is crucial to ensuring we create a world that identifies and appreciates the contributions of all cultures and ethnicities.
Students will gain greater access to historical information through the funding of this project. Students will create informational written and visual projects to present to our school community. They will have the opportunity to create power point presentations to distribute to classmates. The opportunity for students to access commentary and information from multiple sources will ensure that diverse perspectives are investigated and documented. This will ensure that the information presented to students is fair and accurate.
