Exploring a World of Words: Dictionary Digs and Skills Excavations

My students need children's dictionaries to build word and vocabulary skills weekly.

My Students

My students come from many different backgrounds and locations. Many of the students in my classroom are from military families that are transferred to our area. These students bring tremendous background knowledge of locations where they have previously lived.

All of my students are eager learners that want to broaden their horizons and dig into their skills each day!

Each student is an important part of the makeup of our classroom. They look forward to a learning challenge!

I sure do enjoy motivating them and teaching them using varied techniques in an effort to reach all types of learners! I look forward to every day with them!

My Project

Each day, students in my classroom work on building word knowledge. Students will use child-centered dictionaries to find vocabulary words and spelling words and break down the meaning of each word. Students will expand their knowledge base related to each given word.

They will dig further into the dictionary as the year progresses and the students will "excavate" the knowledge they learn from the dictionary!

They will apply it to their work and their daily writing!

The students will greatly increase their understanding of words through definitions.

Students are fascinated with the information held inside a Scholastic Children's Dictionary! Let's get started!
