My kindergarten students come to school every day eager and excited to learn despite many challenges some are facing. I teach in a low income/high poverty school in the inner city. 83% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many of my students are English language learners. Diversity is recognized, accepted, and promoted in our classroom and school.
The five best words to describe my students are curious, cheerful, determined, imaginative, and energetic.
In our classroom, creativity, innovation, and initiative are encouraged and celebrated. Children are given time to explore, make related discoveries, and experience enriched hands-on activities. High expectation of learning is set for all my students in an environment that is honest, respectful, caring, and safe for all.
I'm always looking for ways to reach all my students and provide them with the best kindergarten experience I can. Thanks to donorschoose.org, I am able to provide many resources my students would otherwise have to go without.
My Project
Help us add magnetic pattern blocks and magnetic boards to our STEM area. These colorful, translucent blocks come in a variety of fascinating shapes students love to mix and match. Magnetic edges help the blocks stick together making it easy for kids to build up and out. Best of all, as children explore and create, they get a hands-on introduction to geometry!
Pattern blocks encourage hours of creative building fun!
Working with pattern blocks can expand a student's ability to recognize similarities and differences and develop language related to geometric ideas. Some of the many topics students can explore with pattern blocks are counting, equivalence, patterns, comparing, addition, and subtraction.
