A day in the life of a first grader at our school includes silliness, curious questions, writing stories, practicing using our manners, brilliant ideas, dance parties, listening to our favorite authors, and hard work. They enjoy spending time outside, learning through play, and fostering friendships that will carry them through their educational career at our K-8 school. Hands-on learning and integrating technology into their skill building and projects excites them as learners.
Our energetic group of students enjoys learning using a hands-on approach.
They are movers and shakers and enjoy a variety of work areas, tools, dividers, seating choices, and movable work surfaces. These tools help increase their focus, provides them with movement as they work and helps them feel accomplished and successful.
My Project
In first grade, we would like to create a science exploration table with changing science materials for our students. One of our science standards is to make observations and investigate whether plants need water and sunlight to grow. Students will use these materials to plant seeds, care for them, talk about the parts of a plant, and use magnifying glasses to take a closer look. Teams of students will be able to plant seeds in a grow bag and make observations of how the seed and plant change over time. They will record their observations and label plants parts on each grow bag.
When students learn about plants, nature and how to take care of our earth, it makes our world a better place.
By studying environmental science students will learn about what plants need, how to care for them, the parts of a plant and how plants are apart of our daily life. With the materials we are requesting students will take an in depth look at what plants need to survive. They will build plants using magnetic pieces and label each part. Students will learn about life cycles and read related leveled texts. We will use the book displays above our science table to display books that are relevant to our science standards. Students will be able to freely explore materials and learning using hands on methods.
