My students attend a rural elementary school in South Mississippi with approximately 800 students. They are a diverse group that includes ELL students as well as students who are members of the Mississippi Band of Choctaws. They are bright, articulate and eager to learn. This class has a love of life that is infectious. They are competitive and enjoy hands on learning activities. I teach one class with inclusion students who are a joy. They have a special place in my heart because I obtained my masters degree in reading with an emphasis in diagnosis and remediation.
Many of my students come from poor backgrounds and have limited resources at home.
This makes it difficult for them to complete many of their assignments, but they try hard and want to do well in school. Most of them are so bright and just need learning opportunities that are challenging in order to grow!
My Project
Adding these chromebooks to my classroom will provide my students with opportunities to research and create challenging projects . For example, my students will be completing a project where they have to create a book featuring figurative language in popular culture. The students will be asked to select six figurative language terms, define each term, and provide an example of the term as it is used in popular culture. They will learn how to copy and paste their definitions into a Word document and how to download their popular culture examples, and insert them into their documents. They will learn word processing, how to use the tools on the computers, and desktop publishing skills. The chromebooks selected are essential to this project.
My students will also learn how to create a Prezi in social studies featuring a state of their choice.
This social studies project combines research skills, computer skills and will challenge students to use their creativity.
Perhaps the most profound and beneficial way these chromebooks will be used is to provide online practice for students to increase reading comprehension and fluency. I utilize sites which provide high quality reading passages that include text based activities, comprehension questions and vocabulary emphasis. These chromebooks will be invaluable assets to my students who struggle in reading. Students receive immediate feedback in many programs which is so good for them!
