Help me give my students alphabet knowledge. My students are heading into Kindergarten, I would like to give them a strong foundation in learning letters. The Alphabet Soup Sorters will help build that foundation.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My pre-kindergarten students are full of life every day they come to school. However, at times they are not able to express themselves. Their lack of communication skills is due to their autism diagnosis. However, they come to school every day excited about learning and working hard on the goals set before them.
We are located in the Nation's capital and considered a Title I school due to the number of families that receive free or reduced-price lunches.
They attend a self-contained classroom for students with autism. Due to their disability, they can display aggressive and non-aggressive behaviors to communicate. A lot of what we do in the class is learning how to communicate so that the world will understand them. Learning their alphabet will allow them to have an advantage in Kindergarten.
My Project
My goal is to prepare my students for Kindergarten. Some of them will be able to go into a general education class and others will move to a Kindergarten self-contained Special Education classroom. Having these items will help prepare my students for both Kindergarten classes. Alphabet knowledge gives students a strong foundation in reading. Having various materials will give students multiple opportunities to learn letter identification, letter sounds, and words that begin with each letter.

Exposing students to letters will help to close the achievement gap. Reading opens a child's mind up to the world around them. Learning letters and letters sounds is the first step to a whole new world.
