Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Diversity is a great thing to have growing up. My students come from all walks of life, ranging from multi-million dollar homes to students in the projects. All of the students are mixed in classes together on a daily basis and do not judge one another based on their socio-economic status. However, in this day and age technology is essential for the day to day operation in any classroom. With the implementation of Google Classroom, as well as other forms of media from which schools operate on, any device is great to have in the class at all times.

However, even though many of these technologies exist, nothing beats the feel of actually experiencing some of the places that are discussed in the classroom, Or to discover the science behind how something is built, or designed.

My Project

Have you ever walked into a social studies classroom and watched the students just sit there and copy notes from a lecture? How many times did you watch a boring video that was often outdated? Many times students still copy down information on maps that are irrelevant to modern issues facing many of the regions around the world. Far too often students are unaware of issues even in their own town. What I am proposing is making history and geography come alive and relevant to our students by incorporating a 21st-century classroom approach to teaching social studies through TCI. Teaching with the “TCI Approach” means shifting to a student-centered, activity-based classroom. Lessons and activities are based around five well-established instructional theories: Understanding by design, Nonlinguistic Representation, Multiple Intelligences, Cooperative Instruction, and Spiral Curriculum. All of which are intertwined with inquiry-based learning. These dynamic lessons integrate hands-on learning and content reading, as well as build mastery of state and national geography standards.

The “TCI Approach” is effective at igniting students’ passion for learning.

TCI consists of a series of instructional practices that allows students of all abilities to experience key social studies concepts. TCI activities incorporate six multiple intelligences teaching strategies:

• Visual Discovery

• Social Studies Skill Builder

• Experiential Exercise

• Writing for Understanding

• Response Group

• Problem Solving Groupwork

Each of these strategies appears to all of the different modalities of learning that our students come to school with each and every day. By using these strategies by TCI it will make the history of the past, become the reality of today. This is what I hope to gain by incorporating these TCI materials into our classroom.
