Our students have no music supplies and reading materials. This series would stimulate them and open up the culture of the world to them.
Our school is one of four public all-girl schools in New York City.
We are located in low income minority areas to help break the cycle of poverty that plagues our cities. Many of our students will be the first generation to go to college. Our goal is to enhance the learning of girls.
My Project
This series of books examines the music and cultures of countries around the world. They include very detailed descriptions of instruments and ceremonies important to the societies. It they also include Cd's so the students can hear authentic music. They will be able to learn about music from West Africa, East Africa, Egypt, China, Japan, as well as North and South India.
This project is vital to my students.
Being in a low income neighborhood they do not have much experience with other cultures. This series would give them a concrete source to help open their eyes and minds to a world of vast cultures.
