This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I work at a low economic elementary school with grades preschool to third grade. My students are all classified as being students that have speech and/or language disabilities. I also have a large number of students that are developmentally delayed and numerous students that are on the autism spectrum. The typical student on my caseload reads below level and many struggle with basic phonics skills. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population. Most of our students do not have the opportunities to experience things in the world.

My Project

The books and supplies that I am requesting for my students are recommended books in our current curriculum. I work very inclusively with my teachers and the parish curriculum to improve students overall language skills so that they can be successful in the classroom. I will use the books to do one on one lessons with the students who are currently classified as students with language disabilities. As a public school speech therapist it is my job to support the curriculum while working on targeted goals and objects from the student IEP's. Research has shown these students will be more successful in reaching their goals if this is done in an inclusive approach.
