My Students

Our student population, of over 1,100 students, comes from various cultures and socioeconomic statuses. We have military students visiting from different continents, first and second generation immigrants, and students who have lived in their neighbors their entire lives.

My ambitious, energetic 8th graders, on the cusp of their high school experience, on the verge of setting their course for the rest of their lives, are eager to learn and discuss the challenges of life.

In our class, we love to read stories that are exciting and engaging. Many of my students are struggling readers who don't read because they find it difficult or frustrating. I do my best to find books that make them forget they are reading and transport them into the story instead. Both fiction and nonfiction texts provide our students the topics and philosophies that make up our lives. Watching students become engrossed in a good book is one of the joys of teaching. I love when my students learn to love reading.

My Project

This beautifully written novel is a first-person account of the struggles of surviving the period known in American history as the Dust Bowl. Billie Jo tells her story through verse in this award-winning book: "the way I see it, hard times aren't only about money, or drought, or dust." Student can experience her heartache and growth as they read and discuss the themes of the story. We will also grow our own wheat in our classroom.
