Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One of the most exciting units of the year is our unit on A Midsummer Night's Dream. Each day the students move into their acting troupes and work closely with the text. Sometimes they act out scenes. Sometimes they work on memorizing a passage.
Each day is a new adventure into Shakespeare.
We have a mix of cultures, and none of them have worked with Shakespeare before. Some have never traveled more than twenty miles from their hometown, and others were born in other countries.
Most of them have never experienced live theater. Our school is a 7th/8th middle school. We have a population of about 830 students. For many of our students, English is not their first language, and although 70% of our population receives free or reduced-price lunch, there is also a segment that is middle class. Our students come from ten different elementary schools, so our school becomes a great mixing bowl for our community as students move from smaller schools to a larger one.
My Project
As Shakespeare can feel like a foreign language, we work hard on learning how to understand the original text. By the end of the unit, my students experience great success. Many say that this was their favorite unit in 7th grade.
This project will bring the acting troupe, Shakespeare San Francisco to our school.
My students need an experience with live theater and the opportunity to learn acting skills from the actors of a Shakespeare troupe.
After finishing A Midsummer Night's Dream, we will spend time preparing for the play that Shakespeare San Francisco will be presenting at our school. Students will become familiar with the plot and characters of Twelfth Night, and they will memorize passages and act out passages. W
hen the actors come, they will take small groups of students outside in the quad and work with them on various acting skills. Students will act out lines, learn about rhythm and rhyme, and do pantomimes of scenes. After school, students will attend the performance which is also open to the community. Following the performance, the actors will hold a question and answer session for anyone who wants to participate. It will be a rich experience for the students!
Most of my students have little to no experience with acting or with viewing live theater. Being able to expose students to new experiences is one of the most fulfilling parts about being a teacher. Watching their faces light up as they experience this event is pure joy.
