I am a special education teacher at an elementary school in Brooklyn, New York. This will be my second year teaching first grade collaborative team teaching. Collaborative team teaching is a new educational approach where the class is comprised of 60% general education students and 40% students with special needs. Many of my students come from nearby housing projects and struggle in both their home lives as well as their academic lives.
Young children learn through experiences. One of the best ways for them to have new experiences is through manipulating and exploring. First grade is an important year for students. It is the first year that students are mandated to attend school and for many of my students the first year they attend school. I would like to provide my students with the tools they need to find success throughout their academic lives.
One way that I provide for exploration experience is through center time. This is a time where my students explore mathematic concepts that have been taught or will be taught. These centers provide my students the opportunity to strengthen their skills through play independently and with their peers. I have selected math manipulatives that will provide my students with a variety of skill building activities. These supplies help to build students' strategies in recognizing coins, telling time, fractions, geometry, addition and subtraction.
By having these manipulatives in my classroom, I will begin the new year with the supplies needed to ensure my students success in exploring mathematic concepts that will build a strong foundation for academic success in the future. Thank you for your consideration.
