I'm a special needs teacher at a wonderful Title 1 school. Life can be a challenge in and out of the classroom for students. More than 75% of students are on free or reduced lunch and need assistance obtaining basic living essentials and school supplies. I try to help my students reach their full-potential and encourage them to always aim for the stars. My students have a wide range of disabilities, including autism spectrum disorder, specific learning disabilities, and intellectual disabilities. The support and assistance each child needs in order to be successful in class can vary greatly. Therefore, all lessons must be differentiated and presented in a way that covers multiple learning styles: auditory, visual, and tactile. My students love to learn and get really excited when they tackle a new skill. Our classroom is a community. It's a place where all students should feel safe, welcomed, and loved.
My Project
These eReaders will be used during our classroom social studies and reading blocks. They will help students gain an appreciation and understanding for other cultures, traditions, and countries. Students can read stories using apps such as EPIC, Raz-Kids, and ABCMouse on the tablets and then use it to "visit" the places in the stories.
Using technology, students can travel to foreign countries and see how others live.
Many of my students do not get the chance to travel and gain those real-life experiences that help build tolerance and understanding for others. Through these experiences, students can see that while we're all different and unique, we have much in common as well.
