As you are well aware, children from Louisiana and Mississippi have experienced a great loss. They have lost family, friends, homes, familiar surroundings, places of worship, their culture to mention only a few things. They have been abruptly uprooted from everything that is familiar to them. Even though every effort has been made to ensure that they become acclimated to thier new environment, it has not been met with much success. Let's please bear in mind that these are children and their perspective is much different than adults. They envision themselves as having nothing. The media has been insensitive to them and has described evacuees(their parents) as thugs and useless criminals. With this in mind, I would like to give them the opportunity to explore Houston, Texas. I want them to see this area from a different perspective. There are approximately sixty (60) students at Shadowbriar Elementary who are evacuees. I would like to take them on field trips that will allow them to learn more about Texas and allow them to incorporate those experiences in their classrooms. For example, a visit to the Buffalo Soldier museum would allow them to transfer their knowledge of the civil war and the role that these African American soldiers played in this era. NASA Space Center visit would give the students an opportunity to see the various careers available in this venue. It also highlights the importance of why we study english, mathematics, and science. Lastly, the Children Museum would give them the opportunity to explore the many exhibits this facility offers. More importanly, this gives these students the opportunity to explore, have fun and learn that there are many things they can do in Houston, Texas. Parents will also learn that their children have a chance to learn and grow academically. My desired outcome is that the propose field trips for these youngsters would be that (1)they explore houston and see this area from an historical and fun place and (2) these field trips would provide them an opportunity to learn experientially and not just from a book. Lastly, during our weekly group sessions we could talk about the experience and discuss how it has impacted their viewpoint about their new place of residence.
