Experiencing and Investigating the World Around Us with Science
Help me give my students the problem-solving and first-hand experiences materials that include life science habitats, insect goggles, bar magnets, finger flashlights, and Magic School Bus DVD set to bring science to life in the classroom.
Science is all around us and gives students the opportunity to be active in the learning process. As stated by Jean Jacques Rosseau, "We should not teach children the sciences but give them a taste for them."
I teach second grade in Northern Illinois, where each of my students are unique and have individual qualities.
They are intrigued by new challenges, but face challenges themselves. Within our classrooms, we have special education students who are mainstreamed into the regular classroom, along with English Language Learners. Our goal is to learn something every day!
My Project
The best way to spark interest in science is by involving students with experiences and investigation opportunities within the classroom. Who better than Ms. Frizzle from Walkerville Elementary and her class along with an inventive high-tech bus, Magic School Bus, that invites children introducing the incredible world of science. Not only will students experience the world of science with Ms. Frizzle and the "Butterfly and the Bog Beast" and "Gets Ants in Its Pants", but they will also have the opportunity to experience firsthand and investigate the life cycle of a butterfly, and how ants communicate and work together. Additionally, students will develop new vocabulary, critical thinking skills, and gain confidence in their communication skills.
The donations to this project will give students the opportunity to experience new adventures and have fun in the learning process, have direct experiences, and connect things to the real world.
By investigating light energy with the finger flashlights, students will also have the creative opportunity of reading by constructing a structure that can be utilized reading in the dark. Additionally, creating explorations allowing students to discover how magnets and electricity are connected.
Science gives students the opportunity to be active in hands-on experiences, as well as research and problem-solving opportunities through experiments. Participating in science, the students develop the ability to ask questions, collect information, organize, and test ideas, problem-solve, and apply what they have learned and experienced.
