Help me give my students the chance to expand their worlds through hands-on science learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
In the heart of one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country, the students in my first grade class dream of experiencing the world outside their community. Unfortunately, circumstances beyond their control prevent them from venturing any farther than the school zone.
My first graders yearn to learn!
During a recent science unit, my students had never heard of measurement tools like beakers, graduated cylinders, and funnels. I bought one of each to share with them, and their excitement was deafening! In that moment, I knew I needed to gather more materials for hands-on learning.
What my students lack in privilege and resources, they make up for with dreams and drive. These students deserve so much more than is currently available to them, and I thank you donors in advance for fostering their drive and supporting their dreams.
Imagine growing up in a world that spanned no more than six city blocks. Now imagine attending a school with no science lab and sitting in a classroom with no science materials. Beakers? Graduated cylinders? Tuning forks? It quickly became clear to me that internet images would not suffice to engage my students in science.
Because they have had zero experience handling science materials, I knew my students needed actual science tools with which to explore, engage, and experiment.
With this project, I hope to bring things like beakers, graduated cylinders, tuning forks, prisms, and magnets into our classroom so that my students may work in pairs as they conduct hands-on science experiments throughout the year. We will use beakers, graduated cylinders, and funnels to measure, mix, and explore the many properties of liquids and their densities. We will use tuning forks to explore sound, vibration, wavelengths, and tonal modulations. Flashlights, mirrors, and prisms will enable my students to explore the properties of light and spectrometry. Using magnets to manipulate iron filings will help my students grasp the concepts of magnetic poles and the laws of attraction. Finally, I've requested a drawer unit to keep everything conveniently organized.
Because these materials are of such high quality, they will serve the students at my school for many years to come. The materials requested for this project will give my students a wonderful foundation from which to explore and learn, but I hope to add to the materials in future projects and years, eventually opening a science lab at our school. Thank you so much for your consideration and generosity!!
