I teach 6th and 7th grade Language Arts in a rural Tennessee school. Our school is in one of the poorest counties in the state and money for anything is scarce.

Since we have no formal art program at our school, I decided three years ago to begin integrating fine art into the Language Program. Students write better when they have authentic experience from which to draw inspiration. The experiment has been very successful with the students turning out not only excellent art work but excellent essays about the work as well. Art supplies are expensive, however, and that limits what we are able to do.

Students will use crushed rock and six inch tiles to create small mosaic pictures. There will be several steps to the process, and students will write about all the steps they used in a how-to expository essay. This is authentic learning at its best.

Your help with this project will allow students to experience hands-on art and help them with reality writing. It will be a great project with double benefits!
