Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach an amazing group of 12th grade students who are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions in high school. Our school is part of a small-by-design district model that respects student choice and works with students individually, to develop yearly learning plans. Despite teaching in a high poverty area, my students are engaged, passionate, and enthusiastic about learning.
We strive to provide unique opportunities for every student, be it through academics, clubs, sports, internships, projects, expeditionary learning etc.
At MEC, the staff and students collectively work together to prepare all students to be college and career ready when they graduate. Although we offer our students a lot out unique opportunities, we are still unable to offer MEC students opportunities surrounding the arts due to low funding. .
My Project
The school I work at does not have the ability to offer art or drama classes due to funding. Many of my students have expressed interest in learning more about different types of art, specifically performing arts, but are often unsure how to pursue those interests due to the lack of options available at school and the high costs associated with exploring these things on their own, due to low economic status and financial hardships.
This opportunity to see a performance of Cirque Eloize would allow for my students to experience and be exposed to all different types of performing arts, supporting and encouraging them to broaden their perspectives of the arts, and introduce new ideas of different art forms they could pursue and explore post high school.
