I am a freshman English teacher and student council adviser for my small, rural, high-poverty school.
My student council members have struggled with acquiring materials to be effective leaders. Over the past few years, these students have become very focused upon improving their school through the example of student leadership. Unfortunately, neither our school nor school system has the money to buy materials so desperately needed for these young leaders to succeed. My student council members, for the first time, are excited and engaged, as well as enthusiastic, about the opportunities that student council can offer them. However, I have had to turn down some of their projects due to no money for materials. It breaks my heart to see them so excited, then so sad just because there is no money. This student council affords these children, in a high-poverty area, opportunities for college and advancement beyond their expectations. Many colleges and universities offer scholarships to students who exhibit and excel in student leadership. And so, the student council here offers them a doorway to a bigger future. The problem again is how to acquire materials when I have asked numerous times for funding and been turned down.
The solution is simple in my eyes. I need people to help fund these thirty students as they embark upon their leadership journey this year. The materials I have outlined in my request will go directly to my student council members' efforts to improve their student body. Additionally, these materials will give them an opportunity to exhibit student leadership through the creation of programs, scrapbooks, and other items. Not only will this benefit the thirty in my council, but the whole school, as well as the community, will have a chance to enjoy the products and projects made from these supplies.
The funding of this project will help open a wide doorway of opportunity for my students as they start their expedition of leadership development. In today's world, one of the most important qualities for a young person to possess is the ability to lead a group of people effectively. Through funding our project, you will help provide materials to a group of children who not only want to become integral leaders in the next generation, but also leaders who can impact a whole school by their example.
