My students need art paper, inks, cutting tools, linoleum blocks, and a press. They will use these supplies to design and print a linoleum block print.
Have you ever had the desire to help needy children have experiences public schools don't usually provide? If so, here is your opportunity to do so. I am teaching a middle school elective which will include the experience of creating a linoleum block print. None of these students have been exposed to print making. The class will be designed around historical guilds and include the art of printmaking, making a piece of silver jewelry, soapstone sculpture, and felt fabric making. Students will also learn basic financial skills including budgets, profit and loss as a business, and check writing.
We are a public charter school with most students from low socio-economic families. Home life does not provide them with a strong academic foundation. Most of the students are not exposed to gallery arts and crafts. The school is not well-funded by the district so we do not have the money for many supplies, nor can we count on help from the families and community to help provide these valuable learning experiences.
This elective will provide students with the opportunity to explore their artistic talents as well as learn basic money management and business skills. We will visit a local gallery and have guest appearances from artists and bankers. The supplies you provide will afford these students valuable exposure to new life experiences, skills, and development of artistic talent.
Other than paint, paper, and linoleum blocks the remaining equipment will be available for repeated use in the coming years. Many creative students no longer are provided the opportunity to explore and realize their artistic potential in public schools. You will be providing our students with this incredible chance.
