Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach three science classes. Within these classes I have curious students that want to research and expand their understanding of science concepts with videos and models. They challenge each other in discussions as they learn and grow together.
They are a diverse group of learners.
Within my classes there are students that are learning English as a second language. This does not diminish their desire to learn and grow as scientist. Some students that struggle with focus but are undeniably curious. They push themselves constantly to learn more than what is simply given to them.
They are interested in researching projects, creating presentations, and demonstrating their learning in many ways.
My Project
My students love to research scientific concepts in depth. If we have 8 Chromebooks in the classroom, each group of students would be able to research various science content we are covering in real time. I try to incorporate real-life scientific phenomena in our discussions. They always have questions, but with only three working computers in the classroom not every group has the opportunity to conduct research in a timely manner. This year they have researched erosion, deposition, different types of energy sources, and are currently studying weather. Even after we have closed the units, students have continued to research on their own time. They bring me links, and video suggestions that we could have used in our discussions. Their curiosity is endless.
The 8 Chromebooks will allow my students to create Google docs that they can continuously edit and then expand into power point presentations.
Their research has so much potential to foster their love of science. They can also use them to stream videos and allows them to make their research productive and accessible to all.
The ability to use current scientific research, real-life current events will help all of my students become life long learners. The accessibility of modern technology will make them more ready for high school and college. With your help my students will have access to modern technology and will become fluent users of it in order to continue to succeed academically!
