Help me give my students expansion sets for our Lego Mindstorms EV3 robot kits so they can do more with their robots and extend their thinking to more complex real world problems.
In our 7th and 8th-grade math classrooms, we work constantly on improving our creative and critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our classroom mantra is "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." We want to learn and to be excited about mathematics every day.
My students come from a high poverty area and many lack basic resources, but they are excited to come to school and be in a classroom where they can be involved in "doing" math rather than simply hearing about it.
Anything that can build excitement in STEM encourages them to delve deeper into mathematics and engineering and develop essential problem-solving skills. Funding is always an issue, and I need to supply my students with not only materials for STEM challenges but also with basic supplies like pencils, paper, markers, notebooks for journals, and a myriad of other things.
My Project
We have been fortunate to have received funding for three Lego Mindstorms EV3 robot kits for our middle school Robotics Team and to use in 7th grade math enrichment class. We want to expand our robots and the challenges they can accomplish. These three expansion kits will give our students new configurations for their robot builds and more challenges to extend their learning and their critical thinking skills as they solve new and novel challenges with their robots and their programming skills.
The Mindstorms EV3 expansion kit allows students to deepen their understanding of robotics and coding with new structural and mechanical elements and challenges.
